Another good — and relevant — read, is Guy Deutcher's The Unfolding of Language. It's not very academic, but still interesting.

Oh, Hans, if you want to get started in an fairly light and easy way, I highly recommend Human Evolution: a Very Short Introduction (one of Oxford Press's extensive VSI series). It's a good crash course in paleoanthropology.

Hans: I think the ban extended to linguistics pretty much in general. It seems Philip Lieberman was one of the early taboo-breakers, writing about whether or not Neanderthals would have been able to speak.

Carsten: Please email me a couple of links. I'm happy to read anything that's relevant to the question, even tangentially.

Ah, you should read Newport on maturational constraints, even if it is not on the origin on language per se, it does offer some interesting clues to how our mind may be structured.

I am not sure that is actually relevant, but then I *do* think everyone should read E.L. Newport and M.H. Christiansen.

I would love to hear what you find out about this topic. I'm quite interested in the area, but have yet to do very much about it, because I lack the multidisciplinary "leg up".

I knew the area wasn't very developed within linguistics, yet I had no idea, there had been a ban on discussing the topic - was France just an extreme example or did the ban stifle the debate all over?

Very interesting post
